The Torres Strait Treaty is an agreement between Australia and PNG which describes the boundaries between the two countries and how the sea area may be used.
It was signed in December 1978 after long discussions between Australia and PNG. Talks were also held between the Australian Government, the Queensland Government and Torres Strait Islander representatives.

They are both coastal ships. MV Henry Tohian and MV Beaumaris are both rusting hulks at Rabaul’s Ah Tam wharf.

- Who pioneered the exploration of Mt Fubulan?
You have to go back to 1958 to find an answer to this one. Harley Dickinson, a kiap, pioneered the exploration of Mt Fubulan in PNG in 1958 as a patrol officer.
Harley died in April 2008.
In 1982 he was elected as the Liberal Member for Barwon in the Victorian Parliament (Australia), holding the seat for more than ten years until his defeat at the 1992 election.

New Guinea was then placed under the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force (ANMF) from 1914 to 1921. In 1922 New Guinea became the Australian Mandated Territory of the League of "C" Nations.
After World War II, both Papua and New Guinea experienced joint rule under Australian Administration until Sixteenth September 1975 when Papua New Guinea became an Independent nation.

German New Guinea was administered by the New Guinea Company from 1885 to 1889.
In 1889 the Imperial Germany Government took control, and the colony was administered through the German Government Officials until 1914.
From 1902 until 1914 the colony was run by Dr. Albert Hahl.
After 1914, and as a consequence of defeat during World War I, Germany lost New Guinea to the Allied Forces.

Of course a prolific writer is Sir Paulius Matane who has written too many books to recall the actual number.
My Mother Calls Me Yaltep was written by Ignatius Kilage and The Crocodile by Vincent Eri is another novel that springs to mind. The Crocodile is often quoted as being the first book to be written by a PNG National but see another entry for Ligeremaluoga's -- The Erstwhle Savage published in 1932.

The Coastwatchers Memorial at Kalibobo point in Madang was built over a period of two years (1958 and 1959). It was dedicated in 1959 to the people who relayed information about Japanese movements to the Allies during the Second World War Its official birthday is the 15th of August each year.

The monument was completed in 1959 as a memorial to the to the coastwatchers during the 2nd world war. Apparently intended to resemble a giant torch, the four-finned base makes it look more like a rocket, either way, it’s an incredible look. The light itself, the ‘flame’ encased lamp at the top, can produce an impressive 1,000,000 candlepower beam.

At the end of 1984. It was painted with a big bird of paradise on the side but unfortunately the design could not be reproduced easily on the other aircraft in the Air Niugini fleet.

The Top Bar was the Papua Hotel (Pap) and the bottom bar was the Hotel Moresby both in downtown Port Moresby. They both opened around the year 1910 but are since gone from the skyline of Port Moresby. The Pacific Place skyscraper is now on the site of the Bottom Bar and the Pap site is still vacant after being burnt down in the 1980's.

Collins and Leahy Investments Limited of Goroka acquired 33.3 per cent interest and John Swire and Sons Investment Ltd increased its shareholding to 33.3 per cent. The Chairman of Collins and Leahy was appointed Chairman of Steamships in that year.

You may be thinking of the oil tanker, Manhattan Duke. It was pulled off the reef at the entrance to Port Moresby Harbour (Basilisk Passage) on Monday the 25th of July 1983 after spending about 10 days stuck waiting for salvage experts to arrive from Fiji and Australia. It was estimated that the salvage cost would have cost between K2 and K4 million in 1983 values. The salvage operation was lead by Ian Lockley.

It was established in 1982 and officially opened on the 3rd of September 1983 by the then Minister of Education - Sir Barry Holloway. The school was established to cater for the rapidly growing Port Moresby suburb of Gerehu.
