- Where is Vunakanau Airfield
Vunakanau Airfield was an aerodrome located near Vunakanau, East New Britain, It was approximately 10 miles south-west of Rabaul and it was also known as 'West Airfield'. The airfield was utilised as an emergency landing strip for Rabaul (former airport - Lakunai) until 1983, however it was no longer needed when the new Rabaul Airport was built at Tokua. The runways are now overgrown.
to top
- Where is the Lakunai Airfield
I'm afraid the Lakunai or "East Airfield" no longer exists. After WWII the airfield became to be known as Rabaul Airport. It was located at the foot of Tavurvur volcano, near Matupit Island. The airport was destroyed by the 1994 eruption that destroyed the town of Rabaul.
Lakunai was an alternate airstrip to Vunakanau Airfield.

- Air hostess earn a year?
Please contact the aviation companies for the answer to that question.

- How long is Tokua (RAB)
The airport is at an elevation of 32 feet (10 m) above mean sea level. It has one runway designated 10/28 with an asphalt surface measuring 5,643 by 92 feet (1,720 m × 28 m)

- Who was the first Papua New Guinean to be licensed to fly the Airbus A380, the largest passenger airliner in the world, for Emirates Airlines?
Captain Timothy Narara. Ironically, his elder brother Granger was the first Papua New Guinean to fly the A380 – which pilots call ‘The Beast’ – but his flight was only a trial test flight with Airbus.
to top
- Are there any PNG Pilots at Emirates Air?
Yes. Timothy Narara flies for EMirates. There are several PNG pilots flying in that part of the world.
Tim's brother, Granger Narara, is vice president of flight operations with another UAE airline Etihad. There are two other PNG pilots at Etihad -- Captain Hans Pederson of Bougainville (ex Air Niugini who flies the Boeing 777) and Captain Terry Togumagoma of Milne Bay (ex PNGDF who flies the Airbus A330/340).
to top
- Can I clear Customs at airports other than Jackson's?
There is no full-time Customs, Immigration or Quarantine presence at non-international airports. Operators are required to obtain prior approval from Customs for flights into and out of non-international airports.
to top
- Where can I clear Customs in PNG?
For normal commercial flights only one airport in Papua New Guinea has a full-time Customs, Immigration and Quarantine presence and that is Jacksons International Airport located in the capital city of Port Moresby.
Currently all visitors to Papua New Guinea travel through Jackson's Airport and transfer to domestic airlines to complete their journey to locations within Paua New Guinea.
Operators should note that any aircraft arriving from or departing to overseas may only do so from a Customs approved airport. Some smaller airports around the country are approved to accept mine supply flights and private and charter flights but as Customs and other agencies do not have a full-time presence at these airports operators should check with Customs before finalising their flight plans.

I know they did when they operated DC3's in the early days. In 2002 they flew Dash 8's to Talasea (West New Britain) for about 6 months after Mt Pago erupted and Hoskins was closed.
The agent at Talasea in 1973 was Volupai Plantations.

When introducing new things it is always best to describe it as something that a person already knows especially when it is not possible to show a sample of what you are describing. Commonsense really.

- Who was the first PNG National to gain a pilot's licence?
Napoleon Onzem, from a small village called Watunou in Milne Bay Province, passed his private pilot's licence at the first sitting.
I have been informed by Henry Onzem that his father passed away in 1995 following a stroke. He is survived by 6 sons, one of whom has taken after his father and is a pilot. The oldest has a commercial pilot's licence (cpl) as well.
Henry was also kind enough to help me fix some spelling mistakes - not only had I spelt his surname wrong but had also mispelt the village name.
If anyone else finds mistakes in these pages then I really do appreciate being told. faq.addition@michie.net

These pages need your help - If you know an answer to a FAQ about PNG that isn't here or is here and is wrong please let me know. Ask a question - Submit a questionPlease note that this is not "Ask Jeeves" - you cannot type a whole sentence as your query. Enter a single word, a phrase, or several words and press search.
Please remember that this is a FAQ database about Papua New Guinea.
Doing a search for PNG or New Guinea or even P.N.G will probably not return much. Keep the search simple. i.e. if you want to find out the population simply enter "population" without the quotes. There is no need to have PNG / P.N.G or whatever in the search string.
Also - Spelling is important searching for 'inkom' will not return items related to 'income'. If you are searching Lady Carol Kidu just enter Carol Kidu or even Kidu. You are not searching the WWW only these FAQ's so the topic has already been narrowed to PNG related topics for you.
