The first Lutheran missionaries came to the island of New Guinea in 1886, sent by German mission societies. There were major disruptions in the German work during both World War I and World War II. In 1921, the former Iowa Synod (a predecessor of the American Lutheran Church, now part of the ELCA) responded to a call for American missionaries in PNG, and since that time hundreds of Americans have worked alongside Australian and German missionaries as well as Papua New Guinean colleagues.

- If I get married in PNG is it recognised in my country?
If you and your spouse-to-be are interested in tying the knot in PNG, you'll be happy to know that it's not too tough a task. As long as your marriage is carried out by a legally recognised person in PNG your country will also honour it. Check before leaving though that this is indeed the case
If you only have a short time in PNG then you may not have enough time to prepare everything unless someone in PNG can help you such as the management of a resort or hotel.
You will need the same form of documentation as you do in your own country such as birth certificates etc so bring all that along with you.
Perhaps contact the PNG tourism board or a Church to find out exactly what sort of paperwork you must fill out beforehand, how long a waiting period there is after filing a notice of intended marriage, and what government official has "power invested in him/her." Once you get back to your own country take the original marriage certificate to your registry office and have it officialy filed.

These pages need your help - If you know an answer to a FAQ about PNG that isn't here or is here and is wrong please let me know. Ask a question - Submit a questionPlease note that this is not "Ask Jeeves" - you cannot type a whole sentence as your query. Enter a single word, a phrase, or several words and press search.
Please remember that this is a FAQ database about Papua New Guinea.
Doing a search for PNG or New Guinea or even P.N.G will probably not return much. Keep the search simple. i.e. if you want to find out the population simply enter "population" without the quotes. There is no need to have PNG / P.N.G or whatever in the search string.
Also - Spelling is important searching for 'inkom' will not return items related to 'income'. If you are searching Lady Carol Kidu just enter Carol Kidu or even Kidu. You are not searching the WWW only these FAQ's so the topic has already been narrowed to PNG related topics for you.
