- What year was the foundation stone laid for the YWCA hostel in Port Moresby?
Sir Donald Cleland laid the foundation stone on the 10th of March 1965 at the site of the 2 mile hostel. It was opened the following year.

She was born at Ahioma in Milne Bay but she was raised at Kwato also in Milne Bay.

Dame Alice Wedega became a member of the PNG Legislative Assembly in 1961.

Donna has lived in PNG most of her life. She lives in a little town called Wau in Morobe Province. She contested the 2002 PNG National Elections but was unsuccesful.

The first Tourist Board was established just prior to PNG Independence upon the recommendation of the World Bank. The first Director is recorded as being Bryan Hill.

It is mainly turned into jewellery while most of the locally mined gold is exported.

Born in 1944 he died in 2003. He was considered Papua New Guinea's leading artist.

- What is the fastest time that the Kokoda trail has been walked in?
Not sure what the fastest time for walking the trail is but 22 year old Brendan Buka ran the trail in 17 hours and 49 minutes in August 2006. I am sure he would've had to have walked and climbed some of it.
Wayne Urina did it in just over an hour more than that and 32 year old endurance racer Damon Goerke of Sydney came in third.

- How do most live / people survive in PNG?
The impact of modernisation brings daily change to PNG, but the majority of people, whether they be from the Highlands, the islands or to the Coastal regions of the mainland, remain dependent on subsistence farming and live in small villages. Much of the inherited social structure, from matters affecting gardening to marriage and death, remains unchanged.

- Who is responsible for the day to day work in PNG village society?
The responsibility for the day to day work of gardening and caring for children and animals still lies with the women. Social units are based on family, clan and tribe. Ownership of material wealth is vested in the household and controlled by a male elder.

PNG art forms are as diverse as they are distinctive. In a country where language varies from village to village, it can be expected that artistic expression will differ in style just as dramatically. Pottery, weapons, carvings, basketwork, musical instruments are produced by different people in different places, according to their traditional skills and beliefs

- What can you tell me about PNG Clothing?
With over 800+ language groups living from coastal to inland highland areas I am sure you could imagine that to put it bluntly PNG clothing is very, very diverse and very difficult to describe. Traditionally clothing would have been made from easliy obtainable material such as leaves from plants, bark from trees, decorations from birds, shells, plants etc. In the colder regions warmer clothing possibly made from fur of animals would have been a prized article.
Nowadays many rural people still wear traditional clothing although with the advent of second hand clothing shops more and more people can now afford what is commonly called "European" clothing reserving traditional clothing for festivals etc.

- What is buai?
A handsome tree cultivated in all the warmer parts of Asia for its yellowish-red fruits the size of a hen's egg, containing the seed about the size of an acorn, conical shape with flattened base and brownish in colour externally; internally mottled like a nutmeg.

I hope by WMB you mean Wau Microbank? If that is the case it was opened in 2004 followed by branches in Lae, Kainantu, Wewak and Bulolo.

Not sure but the ToRobert Centre / Bankers College was offically opened by Sir Michael Somare on the 30th of November 1982.

- Where is Jayapura?
Sorry these FAQ's are about PNG. Jayapura is not in PNG although you can get a bus from Vanimo, West Sepik, across the border to Jayapura in the Indonesian province of Papua.

- Is PNG a place where backpackers are welcome?
PNG welcomes backpackers but it does not have many facilities to cater for them. Any accommodation that is advertised as backpackers is usually taken up by locals and then I have only seen them advertised in Moresby and ALotau.
Public transport in Moresby is usually crowded and there may not be room for a backpack to fit.
Outside Moresby the buses offer more room.
Sometimes the only way to get around is by flying and that is considered expensive.

The first issue of the Kina was in four denominations K2, K5 and K10 Bank notes plus a K1.00 coin replaced the existing Australian dollar note.

I do not know how to classify the "average" PNG family. With over 800 languages the country is very, very diverse. Most of the population live in a rural, subsistence farming environment so you could say the average family are subsistence farmers living off the land.

Emma Eliza Coe is better known as the Queen of the South Seas. Her sister was Phebe Coe Parkinson.
Her story was made into a movie released in 1988 called -- Emma: Queen of the South Seas starring Barbara Carrera as Emma. Rebecca Riggs played her sister Phebe.

- Where does Port Moresby get its electricty from?
Port Moresby obtains power from the
Thermal Power Plant at Moitaka
The privately owned Hanjung Power Station
and the Rouna Hydro Power stations.

- What is the present electrical capacity for Port Moresby?
Currently (May 2008), 74MW -- Rouna 1 (3MW), Two (10MW), Three (6MW) and Five (13MW) for a total of 32MW, Kanudi supplies 24MW, Moitaka 18MW used daily in Port Moresby.
PNG Power has indicated that this will be increased to a total of 105MW in January 2009
In Aug 2006, the four Rouna Hydro Power Stations supplied 35MW of electricity, while Moitaka supplied 20MW and the Hanjung Power Station supplied 24MW to meet the load demand of National Capital District and the surrounding areas.
