Thomas Maniwavie was a person very interested in mangroves. He was the founder of the mangrove research centre. He died in 2010. His work is now being carried out by Dr Augustine Mungkaje.

He was one of the first scientific staff at the young Research and Conservation Foundation of PNG, became one of the first scientific staff at the Wildlife Conservation Society PNG Programme, and then became a founder of the PNG Institute of Biological Research.

Paul Pora did many things in his lifetime. He was a clerk of the Mt Hagen town council, a politician, the first chairman of Air Niugini, chairman of former PNGBC and served on the Constitutional Review Commission etc
It has been claimed he was the first multi-millionaire in the Highlands region. He died on the 22nd of October 2010.

He is a medical doctor, a Papuan from Central province near Port Moresby, who spent six years working at the Royal Melbourne and Royal Prince Alfred hospitals in Australia, before becoming permanent head of PNG's Health Department. Up until July 2010 he was the Deputy Prime Minister.

SUMSUMA (1903?-1965), boat captain and New Guinea patriot, was born about 1903 at Sasa village on Boang Island, New Ireland, son of Tamapuat, of Ansingsing village on Tefa island, and Tarapat of Sasa.
During December 1928 Sumsuma organized a strike by almost all Rabaul’s 3000 New Guinean workers to win them £12 a month.

Norah Vagi Brash nee Dagoda was born at Kilakila in 1944. She wrote "The High Cost of Living Differently" in 1975. She was the wife of Dr Elton Brash.

Ilaita Gigimat is a former champion basketballer who represented PNG at the 1975 South Pacific Games in Guam and the 1979 SPG in Fiji. He can also play the bagpipes.

Max Homann established Keynote Music Houses of PNG in 1968. Mr. Homann came to PNG in the very early 1950's as an air traffic controller and later worked as a training officer at the college, which was located at 6 Mile in Port Moresby.

- Who was Jabber Jim?
"Jabber" Jim is James Jacobi. Or to be more precise Sir James Jacobi. He was born on the 26th of August 1925. Jabber worked in PNG as a general practitioner (doctor) for about 40 years, during which time he became the first president of the PNG Rugby League, a position he held for more than 25 years. Sir James died on the 21st of June 2009.

Sir David Hay died in Melbourne, Australia on the 18th of May 2009. He was Administrator of Papua New Guinea from 1967 - 1970.

Allan was a long time PNG educator. Allan officially retired from teaching in December 1999 as principal of Cameron Secondary School at Alotau in Milne Bay. He spent 45 years in PNG. Allan died in Adelaide, Australia on the 8th of May 2009.

- Who was Carl Malpo?
Carl Malpo was the 9th Commander of the Army from 1999 to 2001 before retiring in 2001. Brigadier General Carl Malpo joined the PNG Defence Force in 1973. He died in February 2009.

- Who is James Tanis?
The second President of Papua New Guinea's autonomous Bougainville region after former president Joseph Kabui died from a heart attack in June 2007.
Tanis was born and raised in Panam Village in Lamane, on the border of South and Central Bougainville. He was replaced by John Momis in 2010.

Rupert Roelof Haviland worked for the Department of District Services and Native Affairs. He was in charge of the team who cut through Kassam Pass from Gusap (Markham Valley) and created the first road suitable for vehicles into the Highlands of the country.
There is a memorial to Rupert Roelof Haviland approx. half way up Kassam Pass.

Doing a search for PNG or New Guinea or even P.N.G will probably not return much. Keep the search simple. i.e. if you want to find out the population simply enter "population" without the quotes. There is no need to have PNG / P.N.G or whatever in the search string.
Also - Spelling is important searching for 'inkom' will not return items related to 'income'. If you are searching Lady Carol Kidu just enter Carol Kidu or even Kidu. You are not searching the WWW only these FAQ's so the topic has already been narrowed to PNG related topics for you.
